Whitburn
Our first walk of 2019 was well attended and we enjoyed mild weather. The day had that dullness and lack of colour so typical of January but I think we were all pleased to be out and about on the last day of Christmas.
We set off from the car park next to Minchella's cafe and headed up Church Lane past the red house, a listed building where Lewis Carroll once stayed. It would not look out of place in Wonderland.
After admiring the houses in the charming village of Whitburn we were in open country with wide views of the coast.
Whitburn is well known for its intact windmill but this one is definitely not.
The walk was part of the Bede Way (12 miles Jarrow to Boldon) and Linnets way (5 miles Brockley Whins to Marsden Grotto.
We stopped for lunch on the cliff tops near Marsden Grotto. These photos capture the true feeling of winter do they not?
After lunch we followed the coast back to the car park and came across this stone circle. It is certainly not neolithic - I do not recall it being there last time I did the walk (in 2015).
Although it would have been nice to have had a drink beside a roaring fire in a homely pub there was nothing of that sort nearby so we had al fresco coffee at Minchella's. It was not too cold and one of us even had an ice cream. This was Jackson's first walk in a while and I realised that I had not included him in the shots so far so took a hurried snap as we were leaving.
Thanks to John & Marie for leading yet another walk- they deserve a rest!
Next walk is Feb 9th. It will be a repeat of the 'ant hill' walk (around Slayley Forest)- see September 2016 for the blog entry.
